Realtime video stream to iPad (iOS)

I spent a lot of time investigating my general problem, but I found no purposeful solutions.

I have research project at my institute: I want to stream a video signal, coming out of a medical ultrasound system (usually from VGA interface), in real time to an iPad to do some additional image processing algorithms on the device. Hence, I need to write my own app, a SDK would be useful.

So my question is, what is the best solution?:

At first, I found the HLS (via wifi) streaming of Apple, but the latency is to large, I need approximately a real time solution. Epiphan do such things, but they have no iOS integration. www.epiphan.com I found some solutions of teradek "www.teradek.com", e.g. the cube with an own SDK for iOS programming, here the latency is okay.

Are there other solutions? What is the best way to do this. At the end, the processing on the iPad is mandatory.
