Linear search taking too long to store in memory

I have around 2 billion numbers to be stored in memory for some computation. Now, While adding the numbers i see if the number is previously stored in memory, Inore i else add. The process of linear search is taking long time. Can you please suggest some measure by which the search and addition(of new item) is faster in python.
