Have you ever purposely memorized code, and was it useful?

In school, we memorize the basics - the ABC's , the times-table, the capitals of states.

Is there a place for memorization in Computer Science?

Or is memorization just a waste of time? I find it difficult to see the top programmers ever purposely memorized, but rather learned it by practice.
