Bitwise operation on uppercase ASCII character turns to lowercase. Why?

What is the reason that when I bitwise-OR an ASCII capitalized alphabet it converts into its lowercase version whereas the lowercase version remains as it is? I came across this in the http_parser library of node.js implementation.
