Selling off an algorithm? Patent, copyright, attorneys... what do I do?

I built this financial algorithm that solves a broad problem but has several elaborate modules executing it. I don't think there is anything like it out there and I think it may have lucrative potential, and I'm hoping large financial firms would buy the "rights" to it, whatever that is technically.

The thing is I am not savvy with the legal side with patenting, copyrighting, licensing... and I fear prospective buyers may try to run with my design the moment I pitch it to them. It's not exactly simple to execute and they might need the source code to figure out how to do it, but I'm still cautious. I'm thinking of inviting a colleague as a partner who is not a coder, but he is a bulldog with legal matters and spent the better part of his career fighting technology vendors.

So what exactly do I do? How do I sell this without jeopardizing it? I'm not looking for strangers on the internet to tell me what to do, but I do want to hear any viewpoint from people familiar with this legal process or have been through it?
