Python Gmail app password

I offer this as a "hey look what I found" and not a question.

I had my Gmail username and password in plaintext in a python script that sends me notifications. Fearing it could become compromised, i tested Google's app password functionality with my python script. I created a new 16 char app password, entered it into the script, and it successfully sent the email notification. The app passwords can't be used to log into the account.

I have no reason to doubt this wouldn't work for other programming languages.
