Make a living creating and selling my own software and apps [on hold]

I want to create my own software and applications as a means to earn an income. This being turning my ideas into software and selling it. I have a computer science background and some programming knowledge and experience. I would like to know if this is possible and how can I achieve this. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
