Guidance for beginning open source development [on hold]

I was feeling excited about working in open source. But I need need some guidance as to what are the good practices and how one should start in this field.

I am well versed in C/C++ programming language. But don't have a lot of experience. I also know python and have developed a few programs in it before for my own work. I have developed a number of web apps using PHP, javaScript and MySQL. I am ready to learn a new technology if required.

Some help/guidance from experienced developers will be of great help. Also what websites, tools, etc should I get familiar to, to be an efficient and successful open source developer. I am not just looking about contributing to existing projects or beginning your own. I need guidance on all aspects of open source development.
