How can I make Javascript change the background of my CSS background?

I'm creating a calculator but I need to make a button on it which changes the colour of the container.

I have the button ready with a colour but I have no idea how to make the on click event change the CSS colour.

I need the background: linear-gradient(#xxx,#xxx) changed when the button is clicked, either randomly or to set colours.
