Expanded explanation of conditional statements in Python

Can someone provide a resource that gives a detailed breakdown of conditional statement components?

For instance. Here's a fragment:

def the_term_here(): if 1 < 2: print "great"

I'm hoping to find something that would run: "Okay, 'def' means you're defining a term. That term is called 'the_term_here' The () after that means ...

etc.

I'm running into a lot of inner mental dialogue where I keep saying to myself, "Okay, just go past that for now, it'll be clearer later." I think I would have greater success if I didn't have the growing sense of "Ooh. I surely am adding a lot of 'later' items to my notebook."

Many thanks.
